I've just solved the mystery. I know what Materazzi had been whispering at Zidane's ear every time they got close to each other during the entire game.
*You're going to end your career as a player in the next Brazilian team*
That's Brazilian humour for you I didn't make it up. It's the latests and one of the most popular jokes here right now.
Sorry, Arni, but knowing Latins (because I'm one myself), and don't forget that both of them are Latins, I'm ready to believe that Materazzi, hoping Zidani would do exactly what he did, spent the entire game insulting Zidani's mother, sister, grandmother, dog etc..., etc... till Zidane couldn't take it anymore. I also believe Materazzi, once the game was over, was perfectly capable to swear by the Madonna, by San Gennaro, by his mother's honour, etc..., etc... that he hadn't done such thing.
Though I think this does not justify Zidane's attitude, I also think his impulsive attitude does not detract one jot from the fact that he is a genius when it comes to football and a much better player than Cannavaro will ever be. He was also the heart and soul of the French team in this World Cup. So, I think that, in spite of everything, he does deserve the “Golden Ball”, and I sincerely hope it’s not taken from him. And since, in the last four World Cups, the two games Brasil lost (the Final in 1998, and the Quarter finals this year) were lost to France, and mostly thanks to Zidane, I think I may be considered very impartial judge. |

Jen, I neither like or dislike Zidane, but given that partly due to him Brazil lost the World Cup in 98, and was kicked out in the Quarter Finals this year, you may say that though I admire Zidane's genius when it comes to football, I'm no great friend of his. So, my assessment above is quite impartial. I don't like Zidane but know he's a great footballer and deserves the Golden Ball. And being a Latin, I beg to differ from Arni in believing that it's very probable that Materazzi spent the entire game provoking Zidane, and insulting his entire family, mother included, if even if Materazzi's mother died when he was 15.
As for Zidane and Cannavaro, in my opinion, and again I have no love for Zidane, Zidane was a better player, and accomplished more than Cannavaro did, given that if it weren't for him the French team would most probably have been kicked out in the first phase. But, of course, this is a matter of opinion, and we won't convince each other of the contrary.
I knew you would, mamita. |

LOL, Passo! Your joke cracked me up, though I don't understand how do you brazilians get to think your team sucks that much...

Hear, hear! Another latin here thinks this is true! Us latins can be very devious at times... |

Lin, maybe because the players didn't play as if they cared?
Indeed we can, my dear. |

If there's a reason why the media keeps on picking on every single mistake celebrities make, it's because people actually enjoy it...
Passo, I didn't see it that way. I guess it's hard for the players to come together as a team after having played with different styles in other clubs and against each other. |

Indeed it is, Lynn, but ours played as if they didn't really care. They did not give their all, and that's the truth. |
