Dear Locksley,
Since I was one of those who asked for this thread, I am truly grateful
to you for having come up with so many beautiful (an less) images, from the celebrated, to the newer painters. I was given a copy of Sillmarilion
illustrated by Ted Nasmith, and I am ever so pleased to look at his pictures. However, noone can surpass John Howe, imho, ...he seems to breathe Tolkien into his pictures. I like that you have taken pictures from the older tales...I cannot access all of these pics, due to some belonging to a special Picture site...maybe some have told you this. This was practically all that had to do with Tuor, made by Nasmith.. Don't know why but now you know. Appreciating, Ingrid |

You are most welcome, Arvenstar.
I'm able to access all the links in the thread, including all the Tuor pics. That's odd that you cannot. If you tell me exactly all the links that don't work for you, I'll try finding them on another site so you can see them. let me know. |

Does anyone know of a pitcite by Tolkien or any artists of the broch that the Dunedain led by Halbarad in the Grey Company (ROTK) wore? it is said to be "a brooch of silver shaped like a rayed star"
or just a picture of the meeting of Theoden's men and Halbarad's men? |

smaug by john howe produces a 404 error- may be my computer only, sometimes the uni net has problems with certain sites.
torania comes up as 'can't be found' in all instances,

Hello! I brought this up in my thread in Galadriel's Mirror, but now I know about this sticky and so it is more appropriate here. I found a picture by John Howe of Frodo and Sam in Mordor on the council of Elrond site- I have not seen it anywhere else-not even on Howe's official site. Too me it looks like it may be part of a larger painting-perhaps showing the rest of Frodo. Can you tell me if it is part of a larger painting?-is it viewable online somewhere? Here is the link http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=My_eGallery &file=index&do=showpic&pid=11618&orderby=titleA Thanks |

Hi
Hope you can help me...
I am trying to find a copy of the Hobbit that was lost when I was a child. I am looking for a copy that has a picture of Smaug on the front, standing on top of the mountain with one front claw raised. He is majoritavely red in this version.
I have hunted high and low (being a librarian this is pretty extreme) to no avail.
Can anyone help me find out who produced the art work? Or even an isbn of the book?
Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Locks... Some of the pictures I knew... I sometimes do look on Google... but the result is never quite what I imagine they should look like, *sigh* I really regret that I cannot draw or paint - The one with the soft colours looks quite nice, but not yet as I would imagine the trees... lol, guess I will have to wait and continue looking... maybe one day ... |

I don't think any of them are exactly as I'd imagine the trees either (nor did I expect any of them to be lol), but think Garland's attempt is at least a decent one. |

Lol, lotr... I had to shrink it quite a bit... so the colours look slightly different
Locks, yes Garland's picture is the best I've come accross so far as well (though the colours did look very strange to me in the beginning, now I've grown used to them), but I think it would be nice to have some pictures to choose from ... John Howe's could be nice if he hadn't decided to focus on Melkor and Ungoliant *shudder* - I like the story of the two trees in their youth and it would be wonderful if Howe or Lee (just to name two) could paint a picture of them. When I got the illustrated Silmarillion I did check first whether there was a picture of the trees... plenty of wonderful paintings but sadly none of the trees... but then, probably it is as you say, even if there were more pictures of them, none might look even remotely as beautiful as I imagine them to be. Maybe one day I'll find a nice picture drawn by a Tolkien fan. |

OOOhhh, I have that! I got it at a used book store, along with Day's The Hobbit Companion.
Both have lovely work in them. And I've been struck by his depictions of hobbits, especially in light of the recent hominid finds in Indonesia. The likeness between his drawings, and the restoration of one of the skulls is uncanny! |
